Here, are a few of my homepage designs for my portfolio site. I wanted something tactile and I wanted my homepage to embody a fresh, organic feeling. I drew the ladybug and tulips in Illustrator for refined childlike feeling combined with sketchy "hand-drawn" type to create the overall feeling of "Morgan" haha

This is a fun "chalkboard" design I made for the nonprofit organization which is conveniently located in Raleigh, N.C. This is my first opportunity to work and meet with a real client. I wanted to come up with something fun and exciting. This piece is warm and light-hearted. My goal was to make viewers feel at home with this design as if they can interact and relate to the organization. On the back I have designed a football play composed of n2n's main focuses like hope, justice, and compassion. Due to the fact that the organization has a holistic approach where kids can learn and have fun lead me to force the viewer to see that n2n reaches out to people in a number of ways and a big part of that is that YOU can take part and make a difference in the community. I hope n2n finds this successful and I hope it appeals to young adults to come out and make the community a better place. :)

Here are my first 5 posters/magazine covers that I have chosen for my project. I plan to organize them from least powerful to most powerful. All of the posters have a large impact on me and this is MY order but the viewer will be able to see whichever ones they want and juxtapose whichever ones they want which will be a neat experience. The other 5 that I will use will be older and maybe 2 more that are more recent events in history that have a big impact on the

HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT, a collaboration of artists and designers from around the world to help raise money for the victims. Over 180 different limited-edition series of posters were produced, raising about $50,000. Many of the posters won major design awards, and the effort was profiled in numerous publications. Exhibitions of the show appeared around the country and in Europe. Additionally, many of the posters are now in permanent collections of several major museums, including the Library of Congress and the Louvre. The haiti poster contest was launched three days after the January 12th, 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The project is a collaborative effort by the design community to help effect change through our work. Signed and numbered, limited edition posters have been donated by designers and artists from around the world. All money raised will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

In response to Hurricane Katrina, Walker created "After the Deluge," since the hurricane had devastated many poor and black areas of New Orleans. Walker was bombarded with news images of "black corporeality," including fatalities from the hurricane reduced to bodies and nothing more. She likened these casualties to African slaves piled onto ships for the Middle Passage, the Atlantic crossing to America.

New Yorker Covers Editor Fran? Mouly repositioned Art Spiegelman’s silhouettes, inspired by Ad Reinhardt’s black-on-black paintings, so that the north tower’s antenna breaks the “W” of the magazine’s logo. Spiegelman wanted to see the emptiness, and find the awful/awe-filled image of all that disappeared the on 9/11. The silhouetted Twin Towers were printed in a fifth, black ink, on a field of black made up of the standard four color printing inks. An overprinted clear varnish helps create the ghost images that linger, insisting on their presence through the blackness.

2. Migrant Mother

For many, this picture of Florence Owens Thompson (age 32) represents the Great Depression. She was the mother of 7 and she struggled to survive with her kids catching birds and picking fruits. Dorothea Lange took the picture after Florence sold her tent to buy food for her children. She made the first page of major newspapers all over the country and changed people’s conception about migrants.

History of the Civil WarIn this series of prints the artist Kara Walker has appropriated illustrations from the publication Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War and added her own silhoeutte figures as a means to altering the story being told. Walker is known for her silhouette figures which depict stereotypical images of African-Americans and people implicated in slavery in the United States. Her cast of characters is most often located in the antebellum south and engaged in gruesome and imagined vignettes.

+Power of the Poster

My timeline's central focus is to demonstrate how the posters and magazine covers of major/traumatic events in history is/are recorded and how the display of these events through posters has changed over time. Each poster/magazine cover has a different meaning. The relationship between all of the pieces I chose is interesting, especially when they are juxtaposed. I chose a Chronologial order of events to arrange my information.

Here is my prototype for what my project is going to look like aesthetically. I wanted something clean and concise to allow viewers to interpret the information cleanly. My goal in the visual aspect was to make the viewer interact and respond to the display of information in an interested manner. I have also included an image of how the timeline "works", an image sequence of how the information folds out.

Project 3_Interface design

Take a look at a few of my latest page layout designs. I am not fully satisfied with the "Plants" pages. I tried to abandon the idea and I couldn't because there was something I enjoyed about the page design. There is a flaw or two that needs correcting. The pages all feel like they are part of the same family which works for me. There is some tweaking that needs to be done but I plan to correct this in DreamWeaver. Let me know what you think!

This is a first draft of a homepage design for my new Interface project. I am constructing a website for a flower and gardening business called The Garden Hut. The goal of this website is to provide experienced gardeners new and fun ideas for their gardens and also to help them deal with things such as insects. This website will also appeal to amateur gardeners that need to know the basics. I want this website to hold the viewers attention and keep them interested in exploring more of the site and hopefully they will leave with more knowledge than when the entered.

Design Issues Magazine_Cover Ideas

There is more work to come... The first idea was time consuming. I wanted to incorporate actual artistic jeans to spell out the word "gene". This didn't turn out as pretty as I had imagined...I need feedback!

My second approach was a cleaner...simple look. I wanted to do something abstract and bright...This is my genetic/ double-helix abstraction with floating molecules. I didn't want anything too literal, for example, an actual double-helix. I DID play with type more so in this cover than my previous covers and I think it did help out my design a lot more.

Prism cover ideas

This cover idea is one I actually came up with on a 3 hour bus ride after a double-header this weekend on the way to Virginia Beach. I thought for just a little bit and wanted something colorful. I wanted something colorful and I wanted something that illustrated different ways in which color can appear. I came up with 3 different ways to use display the same color palette which ultimately represents the different perspectives of a prism. So, here it is :)

For the first time instead of thinking...thinking and more thinking for ideas, I just started drawing what I wanted to see for this Prism cover. The title needs tweeking but I am satisfied with the flowers and the layout. This cover option is working for me. Since Spring is approaching I have been inspired by flowers. As I look at photos and real flowers in nature, I am starting to see so much character and personality in them. I see flowers and blooms with the Prism cover because the Prism includes written pieces from a multitude of students here at Peace College. Being that a prism portrays the different perspectives of one object, I think flowers are appropriate being that their wonderful rich, bright colors and breeds can have so many different interpretations and meanings. More idea's to follow :)

North Carolina State Fair Rain Barrel

This is the barrel I painted for the Rain Conservancy Program of Raleigh for the North Carolina State Fair. This was a really great opportunity for me to give back to my community. The barrel along with others were auctioned off and the proceeds were donated to the Conservancy Program of Raleigh. I had a good time painting this barrel...it was my first time painting so forgive me if it's not perfect! My barrel sold for the most money at $150. The barrel has a filter on the top and traps rain water when it rains so you can water your plants or whatever you want by hooking your hose up to the spiket at the bottom. But, I am looking forward to doing this again next year!

5 Gesture Illustrations

In imagining we were assigned the 5 gestures project. We had to start by doing 40 sketches of any object of our choice. I chose a MAC eyeshadow and I don't have a tablet so I had to draw all of these with a mouse. This was a neat assignment, I was able to become more familiar with the Illustrator tools and brushes.

This was my first time making my own brushes and it was a lot easier than it looks! I think it has a neat wire-like effect and is a nice combination of masculine and feminine. I love it :)

This is somewhat of an upgrade from the poster below. I'm not completely happy with the "fetal alcohol sydrome" text at the top. My next poster, I'm going to play with the bubbles pouring over the edge towards the viewer and flowing into FAS which I will move to the bottom of the poster. Hopefully, that will create a better visual connection to the viewer. I'm still working so we will see.

This poster is the first of more variations to come :) It's somewhat predictable being that the martini glass is centered and the background is plain but it IS the updated version of the idea below. Hope this isn't too creepy for anyone :/ :)

This is a watercolor treatment I used from a Psdtuts tutorial. I am having trouble as to where I should place the text that reads "Don't be another statistic" I thought it worked well in the center because that is the focal point of the poster. This picture is kind of funny to me because my sister Brooke was my model and we didn't exactly have a pregnancy test on hand so we used a tampon and a monostat 7 box! I photoshopped the box and strip into the picture and it turned out pretty good! Melting camera tutorial! I selected this tutorial and I went in thinking it was going to be difficult! Transparent glass tutorial:

This tutorial was so interesting and simple :) It literally has 8 steps and gives the coolest effect. I love the glassy clean look that the effects give type. The little sparkles on the glass were my favorite little touch! I hope other's try this tutorial because it was a fun one.

I got this idea from searching images on the internet. I recreated this image in watercolor pencils and pen. After I scanned the image in I increased the saturation to give it the cool neon effect. I hope you guys like this because I really want to move forward with this! :)

Here are a few business card variations...I need feedback. I personally prefer the top horizontal piece. It works for me being that you can simply flip the card to the left or right to read the backside. Also, in the horizontal version up top I was able to use the "talk of the town" type illustration to scale. Tell me what you think.

Hey you guys, I took the classes advice and cut the "Talk and Town" from different variations and cut the "of the" from another and combine them. I played around several times and this is the one I have decided to move forward with. I chose the horizontal version because I think it reads best and feels balanced especially if this is going to be on the back of Talk of the Towns business card. Tell me what you think!.

Talk of the Town Salon- Flyer 1

This is a flyer option for a beauty salon. The motto is "Every girl wants to be the Talk of the Town". My solution for this motto was to create an image using contrast to draw attention to a girl who is quote on quote the "talk of the town". I drew the image and scanned it in because I wanted the card to have a personal unrefined element. This is one option, there are more to come.

Peace College softball poster-2010

Action shots by our pitcher Kendra Yearick's father Karl inspired this poster. Karl snapped hundreds of pictures at the Peace College annual softball game in the Fall of '09. I chose pictures that illustrated good fundamentals and competitive softball in hopes of good advertisement to bring the public, faculty and students out to games to support us in the spring for our 2010 season.

Rhythm

Pattern

Pattern repeats itself to create rhythm. The reoccurance of lines, colors and shapes to create movement.

Non-pattern

Movement/dynamics

The use of elements which have something in common are repeated regularly or irregularly sometimes creating a visual rhythm.

Movement/direction

Rhythm is achieved by having a dominant visual path of line making the design appear to come to life.

Contrast

When one element differs from another, like an interruption of overall feeling of a pattern. For example, dark elements in the background while the foreground is light creating a focal point.

Isolation

Isolating an element in an image it creates an attration that meets the eye.

Placement

To place elements within a composition point to one item, the viewers attention is directed to that item creating a focal point.

Absence

When attention is achieved by not using a focal point

Human Reference

Human reference- The use of a human in a design to show the scale of the object or design so the viewer can comprehend or better understand the proportion.

Context

Context- How the surroundings and the environment can affect the outcome of an image.

Internal

Internal (object to picture plane)- Describing the scale of an object by placing that object inside another object. For example a fish inside a fish bowl.

Contrast

Contrast- The the extreme of one thing affects the other. For example like the yinyang, the darkness of the left side allows you to direct your attention towards the lightness of the right side.

I found this design at typetheory.com. Grafik Tasarim is the leading graphic design magazine in Turkey best known for design news, research and educational articles.I like the way the designer collaborated with an artist to form a lowercase “a” with human muscles and and also the anatomy of a standard letter. This image was built by hand and 3D computer generated images created with Maya and Zbrush. I am typically drawn to designs that take extreme effort, I like to see that the designer has devoted everything he or she has to the design and it fascinates me. I can see that the designer went way out of his was to recreate a common vowel in such a new way. It reminds me of the work of Christo and Juanne-Claude in the way they allow you to focus your attention on something you often overlook. Kudo's to this designer, he has officially inspired me!
